Catechetical School Schedule and Curriculum
We truly believe that an effective Catechetical School should be based on the philosophy of "Parental Partnership."  We will remain focused on building an extension of the primary parental responsibility for the spiritual education of our children.  It will remain our strong goal that we provide an education that:

1) Will guide the spiritual development of our children with participation in the Orthodox Christian Community

2) Will reinforce the Orthodox character and

3) Will provide a strong Orthodox Christian curriculum

The 2017/2018 school year will begin on September 24th, 2017.

Registration Form

Dear Parishioners and Parents of our Sunday School,
Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
Welcome to the 2017-2018 Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church Sunday school year!  We are looking forward to yet another spiritually invigorating academic year.  With your love and support, we are sure to be successful.  There are many opportunities available for volunteering; please let us know in case you want to help!

This year, once again, we are accepting donations which will help us enhance the program our church has been able to offer for the last two years, purchase updated student textbooks and materials that are urgently needed. We would appreciate a donation of at least $15 per child to cover these expenses. We are sincerely grateful for your assistance and financial support.
Registration will take place on the Sundays of September 17, while classes begin on Sunday 24 September 2017.

Echoing our Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America Religious Education Department Director, "the goal of catechists is for each person to become a living icon, reflecting the Christ-like way of knowing and being in the world".  All Orthodox Christians by virtue of baptism are called to transmit the gospel and to be concerned about the Orthodox faith of their brothers in Christ, especially children and young people.    During 2017-2018 academic year, with God's grace, Sunday School will continue to follow our Archdiocese vision of Orthodox education. Our SS teachers will enrich their leasson plans with the invaluable tools and material our Archiocese prepared for the new academic year.
Parents as well as family and parish members are the most influential educators of our children.  Parents, primarily, heavily influence how our children develop. Hence, the family at home and the church family represent the first school experience in our children's life as they are taught daily social virtues.   To this end, we strongly encourage parishioners involvement in our Sunday School and experience first-hand our children's relationship with God.  Under the spiritual guidance and blessing of our Father George, we look forward to working with all of you to make this wonderful year full of Christian Orthodox learning, discovery and fun.

In addition, for the past two years, our Sunday School participated in a number of activities which focused on acquiring information about our Orthodoxy as well as living according to our traditions as they have been passed to us by our parents and grandparents; activities included chanting Bishop Evangelos' Pheme during one of his Eminence August visits to our parish, providing prosfora for our Divine Liturgy for a whole month, providing 75 meals to those less fortunate at a shelter, organizing a Palm Sunday Fish dinner (the earnings of which went to our church building fund),  participating in the metropolitan Washington area programs dedicated to the OXI Day and Annunciation/March 25th celebration, organizing a lecture dedicated on the TRIODION, etc, etc. These activities, which were in addition to our regular program (and classes) , will also take place this year, strengthening our youth's relation with our Orthodox Tradition and preparing our children to become the next leaders of our community.
Sunday School provides an ideal support group for parents. Being a working mother of three children, I know it very well! This year we will be looking for opportunities so that Sunday School parents and teachers meet and exchange experiences and ideas, learn from each other and discover biblical principles that apply in specific parenting situations.
Once again, Welcome to our 2017/2018 Sunday School!

In Christ,

Ergini B. Martnishn
